A tarte tatin is a French upside-down pastry where apples are slowly caramelized in butter and sugar on the stovetop before being covered with a pastry crust and baked in the oven. Then, it's flipped and served. Buying pre-made puff pastry makes things easy.

Ingredients

  • 2-4 firm apples, peeled, cored and cut into sixths (like Pink Lady or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • ⅓ cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp salted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375℉.
  2. Melt the butter and mix in the vanilla and brown sugar. Pour into a 10” round oven-safe pan.
  3. Layer the apples beginning on the outer edges and work inward, overlapping to eliminate gaps.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry and lay over the pan. Trim the edges and tuck on the inside of the pan to cover the apples fully.
  5. Bake until the pastry is golden brown, 20-25 minutes. Let cook slightly before inverting onto a serving plate. Serve warm.
